Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is the concept of an AI system that can do anything an intelligent human can do - reason, plan, learn from limited experience, adapt to new environments, solve novel problems, and transfer knowledge across domains. Unlike today's AI, which excels at specific narrow tasks, AGI would be flexible and generalist by nature.

Today's AI, including the most powerful large language models, is considered narrow AI. GPT-4 can write poetry, write code, and explain scientific concepts, but it cannot autonomously navigate the physical world, form long-term goals, or truly understand context the way humans do. Experts debate whether scaling up existing approaches will ever reach true AGI or whether fundamentally new approaches are needed.

The timeline for AGI is one of the most debated questions in technology. Some leading researchers believe AGI could arrive within decades. Others argue it is centuries away or may not be achievable at all with current paradigms. The difficulty lies in replicating not just narrow cognitive skills but also common sense, causal reasoning, and genuine understanding rather than pattern matching on training data.

For now, AGI remains a research goal and a topic of philosophical debate rather than an imminent technological reality. The practical AI tools available today, including AI copilots for professional workflows, are powerful narrow AI systems that augment human intelligence rather than replace it.
